Champion Square is the meeting point of many routes pedestrian and cycling routes but its open nature means traffic conflict is common, especially at rush hours and when vehicles abuse the space and park.
This section of road is only used by residents, couriers and active travel commuters but the space is still a road rather than being pedestrianised. During rush hour hundreds of bikes come down here as well as pedestrians without protection or infrastructure.
Orange areas demonstrate areas that would be pedestrianised with dark green lines showing existing and light green showing possible active travel infrastructure. Purple areas show improved hospitality areas. Light blue areas show parking spaces retained and dark blue shows direction of travel.
By reversing New Street's one way, adding bike lanes, pedestrianising roads and formalising the road in Champion Square, the area will become a safe active travel through-route but also a destination for those wanting to have a drink at a the pubs or relax in the shade. Children from the nearby council flats will be able to play ball games and will also be kept safer as less traffic comes through the area but access for businesses and residents is maintained, exiting the area via Great George Street Home Zone and Wade Street.
